Polyester or pure silk: which should I choose?

Polyester

If you are attending as a friend or colleague, polyester is perfectly fine. From a distance it is hard to tell apart from silk, and you don't have to worry about stains or rain.

Pure silk

If you are attending as a family member, or the wedding is a Shinto ceremony or at a formal venue, we recommend pure silk. It has the luster and softness only silk has, and looks elegant in photos.

Y.'s houmongi seen from behind at Meiji Shrine

Y.30s · Guest at a wedding at Meiji Shrine

My first houmongi, with thoughtful care every step of the way

“I rented a houmongi to attend a friend's wedding. It was my first time wearing one, but the staff gave me advice and I had fun choosing my kimono. While dressing me, they kept checking that nothing felt too tight, and I felt cared for and at ease the whole time! The kimono was so vivid and lovely that I was sad to take it off! I'm not used to wearing kimono, but the shop is close to Meiji Shrine, so I could return everything right after the wedding, which was a big help. I was truly happy to attend my dear friend's wedding in such a beautiful kimono. Thank you so much!”

I could choose the kimono I loved, and Meiji Shrine is right nearby

“I used this shop to attend a wedding at Meiji Shrine. They have a huge variety of kimono, and I was happy to pick my favorite from so many. You can also choose from lots of accessories, and when I couldn't decide, the dresser suggested a stylish coordination and put together a lovely combination for me. Everything is provided, from the kimono to the accessories, so it was really convenient to come empty-handed. Above all, it's very close to Meiji Shrine, so the access is excellent!”

I brought my own kimono, and they had every missing accessory ready

“I used this shop to attend a friend's wedding at Meiji Shrine. I brought my own kimono and obi, but they checked in advance which accessories I was missing and had everything I needed ready, so I could go into the day feeling at ease. The dressers are all experienced veterans who worked very efficiently and finished everything beautifully. Even after wearing it for hours, nothing came loose, and I was comfortable all day. I'd recommend this shop not only for sightseeing but also for formal occasions like attending a wedding.”
